Gov. Parkinson Proclaims July as Park and Recreation Month in Kansas
Get outside, pack a picnic, play on a playground, compete in a sport and enjoy the sunshine! Kansas Governor Mark Parkinson has joined with the Kansas Recreation and Park Association (KRPA) in declaring July as Park and Recreation Month in Kansas and wants all citizens to join in the celebration. July has been designated as National Park and Recreation Month by the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) since 1985 as recreation facilities and parks across the country kick-off summer programs, promote outdoor physical activities, and pull together community volunteers to make outdoor space a better place for all.

Who should attend? – KRPA’s professional development institute is open to anyone who wants to enhance their leadership skills, network with other professionals in a relaxed atmosphere and gain management knowledge that relates to the park and recreation industry. While the target audience is young KRPA professionals, any one at any stage of their career will benefit from their experience at Tomorrow’s Leaders.
What is the purpose of Tomorrow’s Leaders? – Our goal is to provide an educational opportunity to help growth and development as a professional. Each year, the institute will focus on two aspects of management training, with a pair of three-hour presentations from highly-skilled trainers to provide instruction.
Parks and Recreation to Help Lead National Coalition Fight for Fitness and Health
Leaders of the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) have joined a broad coalition of experts to support the National Physical Activity Plan, a sweeping initiative to improve public health. The Plan, which officially launched early in May at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C., outlines strategies for motivating people in every community to become and stay physically active and to remove the barriers that may stand in their way. Fran Mainella Headlines 2010 Built Environment and Outdoors Summit
Fran Mainella, former director of the National Park Service, member of the Board of Directors for the Children and Nature Network and current co-chair of the US Play Coalition, will serve as the keynote speaker of the 2010 Built Environment and Outdoors Summit, scheduled for October 19-20 at the Wichita Marriott Hotel.

Ahoy me mateys! Tis time once again to begin a plan for the 43rd Annual Kansas Recreation and Park Association Conference. Ye are invited to attend all the swashbuckling fun. Hearty sessions will be held throughout the day with information fit for a pirate, a concert with dancing and treasure chests full of ye best pirate loot awaits you on Tuesday eve where we shall find which of ye holds the key to unlock the treasure. Wednesday eve ye shall be given a map to see if ye can find the pirate’s booty. Dust off ye peg leg as a pub crawl will also be on ye list. It shall be a conference that includes all of ye best, pillage an’ plunder awaits. Ye landlubbers keep ye eye out for future information, savy?
New Partnership Creates Blue CHIP Awards Program To Promote Healthy Kansas Communities
The members of KRPA - who are dedicated to the promotion of healthy lifestyles in Kansas communities - and the state’s largest health insurer have announced a new business partnership aimed at creating a healthier state by improving the quality of life for Kansans. Citing a common desire to make Kansas a healthy, happy place to live and work, KRPA and Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas (BCBSKS) have forged a new partnership, resulting in the creation of a community awards program. BlueCHIP® is a community health improvement program created to recognize and reward Kansas communities who encourage and support healthy lifestyles through programs, initiatives, policies and/or community-wide events.

KRPA Announces Award Winners
Bill Katzenberger (Leavenworth), Steve Snyder (Salina), John Knight (Shawnee County), Jalinda Blanding (Gardner) along with Sen. Laura Kelly and Sen. Vickie Schmidt headline the list of awards winners honored during the 2010 KRPA Conference and Trade Show. KRPA honors achievements and significant contributions to park and recreation in Kansas for individuals or organizations in 10 categories during its annual Awards Luncheon.The winners were selected from nominations submitted to the KRPA Awards Committee from members throughout the state. The KRPA Executive Committee selects hall of fame recipients.

Buffalo Dunes to Host Annual SWKR Golf Tournament
Garden City Recreation Commission, KRPA and Buffalo Dunes Golf Course will serve as host of the 9th annual Southwest Kansas Recreation Golf Tournament, Friday, August 20, 2010. Buffalo Dunes is recognized as one of the top 50 Municipal Golf Courses in the USA. Deadline for signup is August 13, 2010 for four-person scramble golf tournament and the cost is $240 per team. Fees will cover green fee, cart and a meal following the event. The tournament is scheduled to start at 9 am.

Scholarship Opportunities for Members
KRPA members are encouraged to take advantage of an opportunity to apply for scholarship support to attend regional or national schools, KRPA workshops, NRPA Congress or the KRPA Conference and Trade Show. Each year, the KRPA Scholarship Committee – which consists of members of the association executive committee – will review applications from KRPA members/agencies for funding support through the Larry Heeb Professional Development Scholarship Fund to attend educational events.
