Fran Mainella Headlines 2010 Built Environment and Outdoors Summit
Fran Mainella, former director of the National Park Service, member of the Board of Directors for the Children and Nature Network and current co-chair of the US Play Coalition, will serve as the keynote speaker of the 2010 Built Environment and Outdoors Summit, scheduled for October 19-20 at the Wichita Marriott Hotel.
Mainella is currently a Visiting Scholar at Clemson University Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism Management and her areas of focus include children and getting them back to nature. She’s a member of the Newsweek Magazine Environmental Advisory board and is former executive director of the Florida Recreation and Park Association. The summit is designed for community health and trail system advocates, city or state government leaders or planners, or anyone interested in learning techniques and philosophies to enhance healthy lifestyles through community development, outdoor activity and nutrition. The summit will identify resources and address how to take action to affect environmental policy at the state and local level to promote physical activity for a healthy Kansas. Registration information will be made available in the near future.
Summit Overview
The design of a community — where people live, work, learn and play — heavily influences their well-being. The built environment — its bike- and walkability, access to fresh fruits and vegetables, and safety — all affect an individual’s ability to be active and eat healthy. Learn to identify resources and how to affect environmental policy in your community.
