Why Become a CPSI?

  • Learn from expert instructors and network with other professionals from the field.
  • Protect children from injury due to playground hazards.
  • Reduce your agency’s liability and take your career to the next level.

Who Should Attend the CPSI Course?

There are an estimated 200,000 playground related injuries reported yearly. The Certified Playground Safety Inspector Course is a must for staff from park and recreation agencies, school districts, child care facilities, health departments, landscape architects, playground manufacturers, installers or contractors, insurance firms, consumers and others responsible for play equipment areas or playgrounds.

The Playground Safety Standards and CPSI examination are available in Latin American Spanish for those interested. Please request this option from Jamie Reed (jamie@krpa.org) at the time of registration.

The Certified Playground Safety Inspector (CPSI) course promotes children’s right to play and promotes the importance of play in children’s development. CPSI provides the most current comprehensive training program on playground safety including the development and distribution of playground training and safety products. CPSI provides input to help develop responsible public policy for the guaranteed safety of our children while at the same time advocating sound fiscal responsibility to provide resources for the ongoing maintenance and support of the policy.

Changes to CPSI Renewals

NRPA is making changes to the CPSI renewal process. Starting with certifications expiring July 1, 2026, or later, you’ll now have two ways to renew: Sit for and pass the CPSI Exam, OR complete 2.0 CEUs in playground safety during the 3-year certification cycle and submit a CEU Recertification Application.

The good news? You can now earn all 2.0 CEUs through KRPA. Both the Playground Maintenance Course (PMC) and the CPSI Course qualify toward the CEUs you need. KRPA plans to offer both PMC and CPSI in the spring and fall—making it simple and convenient to stay certified without traveling far. NRPA has created an FAQ webpage to walk you through the details and answer common questions. This new flexibility makes recertification easier, more accessible, and keeps you connected to your Kansas parks and recreation peers while continuing your vital work in playground safety.
