KRPA Tomorrow's Leaders Institute


KRPA’s professional development institute is open to anyone who wants to enhance their leadership skills, network with other professionals in a relaxed atmosphere and gain management knowledge that relates to the park and recreation industry. While the target audience is young KRPA professionals, any one at any stage of their career will benefit from their experience at Tomorrow’s Leaders.

This training is held at the Tall Oaks Conference Center. The Tall Oaks Conference Center is located on 350 woodland acres two miles east of Linwood. The beautiful woodland setting is 15 miles from both the western boundary of the Greater Kansas City Region and the northeast corner of Lawrence. Attendees are required to stay overnight for the entire institute, and will be housed in the air-conditioned Lifelong Learning Center Lodge with two or three people per room.

Attendees will leave with fresh perspectives and practical tools to become more resilient, effective leaders.

9:30 AM - 10:15 AM Intro to Board Meetings Session - Susan Mong, Johnson County Park and Recreation District
The success of our park and recreation organizations depends on the productivity and performance of the boards that support the mission and vision of our organizations. This includes policy making boards, fundraising boards, and advisory councils. This session will focus on relationship building strategies to help position your organization and the members of your boards to accomplish great things together. Strategies covered will include job descriptions, on-boarding, evaluation, communication, and meeting productivity.

10:30 AM - 11 :15 AM Budget Basics, Jeremy Myers, Overland Park, Park and Recreation

This session will cover the basics of budgeting for a park and recreation agency. Learn why we prepare budgets, the components, and the process to pass a municipal budget.

11 :30 AM - 12:30 PM Lunch (DH) & Break

12:30 PM - 1 :30 PM Obstacle Course Team Challenge

1 :45 PM - 3:00 PM Bridge the Gap with the Generations, Candy Whirley
This interactive, energetic and entertaining presentation will enable participants to recruit and manage top candidates by learning the differences between generations Boomers, X, Millenials and Zand their work habits and goals. Candy will also touch on her knowledge of personality differences in order to help participants understand that there is truly a difference in communication and conflict management between the four main personalities.
