Designing Places, Growing Leaders

At Landworks Studio, we spend our days designing places for people—parks, trails, civic spaces, streetscapes, and landscapes that become part of the everyday life of a community. While every project brings a different set of opportunities and challenges, we’ve found that the best design processes often share a few things in common: listening well, welcoming different perspectives, building trust, and working together toward a shared vision.

In many ways, good leadership works the same way.

As a women-owned landscape architecture and planning firm, our team has grown around a collaborative approach to design. We believe good ideas can come from anywhere, and that the strongest solutions are rarely the product of one person working alone. Instead, they emerge through conversation—between designers and clients, community members and stakeholders, consultants and contractors, and among our own team.

That means asking questions before assuming we know the answer. It means being willing to rethink an idea when someone brings a new perspective to the table. And it means recognizing that leadership doesn’t always look like being the loudest voice in the room. Sometimes, it looks like creating the space for someone else to contribute theirs.

We see this play out throughout the design process. Community members sharing how they use a park can shift the direction of a plan. A young designer asking a simple question can uncover an opportunity the rest of the team overlooked. A client’s knowledge of the people they serve can turn a good design idea into one that truly belongs to its community.

Ultimately, our role as landscape architects isn’t simply to design a place. It is to bring people, ideas, and possibilities together to create something that serves a larger purpose.

The landscapes we design will continue to grow and change long after our drawings are complete. Similarly, we believe a successful leadership approach creates room for new ideas, invests in the people around us, and builds something that will continue to grow beyond any one person.

Because whether we’re designing places or growing as leaders, the best outcomes are the ones we create together.
